British Army Pattern 1856 Pioneer Sword & Scabbard. By ROBERT MOLE & SONS BIRMINGHAM.
This type of sword was issued to British Pioneers in 1856 and was declared obsolete in 1904.
The hilt is all brass with a stirrup type guard which is stamped " M over 4.D.Y " and a 2nd batch of Numbers " 4/93 " on the inner crossguard.
The grip with horizontal rings and is fitted to the tang with four rivets.
The straight saw backed blade has a spear point and is stamped " ROBERT MOLE & SONS BIRMINGHAM 3 / 93 " on the ricasso.
It has some Acceptance Stamps on the opposite side of the ricasso.
On the Spine of the blade (back of the blade) up against the guard is a selection of Acceptance Stamped Markings.
The Scabbard is made from Brown Leather with a Brass metal tip and throat .
Around the edge of the throat is a selection of Stamping"s . " M / 4.D.Y / 5 and a 2nd batch reads " 4 / 93 ".
On the back of the leather scabbard are some Acceptance Stamps in the leather -see photo.
The leather is good and just needs some cleaning.
I have added a photo showing the sword in its scabbard, it fits well but i don"t want to push it all the way down to the end as it is a very tight fit.
over all the sword is in good plus used condition and sold as is.
